Westeros

Game of Thrones Westeros

Westeros is one of the three known continents in the Known Continents (the continents that are mentioned in the Books). Most of the Westeros consists of the Seven Kingdoms, and is ruled by the one who sits on the Iron Throne. Westeros is located west of Essos, separated by the Narrow Sea and it is located north-west of Sothoryos.

The shape of Westeros is pretty long compared to the other continents. Westeros has a lot of important sub area's, The North, the areas beyond the Wall, the Riverlands, the Iron Islands, King's landing, The Vale, The Westerlands, The Reach, The Stormlands.

The North

The North is almost the largest area in Westeros, but less populated. The people in the North still worship the Old Gods. The northern climate is harsh and the winters are long. The North is guarded by the Gift, the areas of the Night Watch. The southern border is on the Neck. An area with a lot of swamps. The area is governed by the House of Stark.

Beyond the Wall

The area beyond the Nights Watch is called the Lands of Always Winter, which stretches from the Wall to the undiscovered countries. The majority of the area is filled by the Ghost Forest and there are many rivers and lakes of ice in the Lands of Always Winter.

The Riverlands

The Riverlands is a fertile area between the three Tridents, these are rivers dominating the Riverlands. This area is governed House Tully of Riverrun.

The Iron Islands

The Iron Islands are a collection of islands just west of the Ironman's Bay area. The islands have seven main islands, these islands are very small and clustered. The Iron Islands are governed from Pyke by house Greyjoy. The people of the islands are good at seafaring, especially maritime raiding. The people born in the Iron Islands are also called the Ironborn and they worship the Drowned God.

King's Landing

King's Landing is directly governed by the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, the one who sits on the Iron Throne. Kings landing covers its town and its surroundings. King's landing is east of the Westlands and north of the Stormlands and The Reach.

Essos

Essos is the name given to the continent by the inhabitants of Westeros and means: "Land of the East." On Essos different names for their continent are in circulation, but these are more related to the area the people live in.

Essos is roughly the same size as Europe and Asia combined. Essos is therefore larger than Westeros, yet the true size of the continent is unknown. The northern coast is separated from the northern polar region by the Haze Sea. In the south, the continent is bordered by the Summer Sea. And in the far east, the land is bounded by the Jade Sea. Westeros has a lot of important sub area's, the Free City's, the Dothraki Sea, Valyrian Peninsula, Slaver's Bay, Lhazar and Qarth.
